This course aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to plainchant including history, performance practice, and pedagogy.  During this course, we will explore a brief history plainchant and the two main bodies of chant literature, the Mass and the Office. Course members will learn to read and sing neumes proficiently with musical nuance appropriate to square notation through study of historical practice and practical application. Finally, we will examine chant as a pedagogical tool and a component of a choral rehearsal. The material will be structured into a series of sung exercises, readings, lectures, and listening assignments. Additionally, each student will have an opportunity for one-on-one online conference time with instructors for singing assessments and questions.
